How much time should I set aside for a treasure hunt?

What is a treasure hunt?

A treasure hunt is a quiz that lies out on the street. You get a map of the city with some forty stops on it, and at every stop a question whose answer can only be found there: on a facade, in a window, under your feet. Looking it up does not help. Looking around does.

You need nothing but a phone with an internet connection. No app to install, no account, no booking. You tap start, type in your team name and off you go. There are two to three hours on the clock depending on the city, and that is generous. You pick where you start and the order you take the stops in, so if you would rather walk slowly and stop for a drink along the way, you simply do a few stops fewer.

One phone per team is enough, and it is also the nicest way to play: everybody looks at the same screen and everybody shouts something. On your own is fine, with two it is good company, with four or five it gets loud. Children who can read join in easily, and they are often the ones who spot the details the rest of you walk straight past. For a team outing you split the group into teams that each enter their own name, and the leaderboard shows you live who is ahead.

Every stop you solve is worth points. If you get stuck there is a hint, but it costs you half of them. When the clock runs out your score and your time are frozen, and you get your place on the leaderboard plus a card to share. After that you are welcome to keep walking and solve the remaining stops, without points. We keep only your name, score and time, and after 36 hours even that is gone.
